UBSI Rector Highlights Expanding Career Prospects for International Relations Graduates

The Rector of Universitas Bina Sarana Informatika (UBSI), Prof Dr Ir Mochamad Wahyudi, has stated that the field of International Relations (IR) is no longer limited to the profession of diplomat or embassy staff, but has evolved into a strategic discipline required by various global organisations and multinational companies. “International Relations today has entered a new phase. The world is not only talking about state-to-state relations, but also international organisations, global corporations, and cross-border digital ecosystems. IR graduates play an important role in understanding these dynamics,” Prof Wahyudi said, as quoted on Wednesday (24/6/2026). According to Prof Wahyudi, many prospective students still perceive the IR major as solely related to formal diplomacy and state affairs. In reality, its scientific scope is far broader and highly relevant to the needs of a hyper-connected modern world. The IR Study Programme examines interactions between nations, global politics, international cooperation, world political economy, diplomacy, international security, and contemporary global issues such as migration, regional conflicts, and digital transformation in international relations. “IR students not only learn global political theory, but are also trained to understand negotiation, international issue analysis, cross-cultural communication, and strategic thinking skills in viewing global issues from multiple perspectives,” he explained. He added that these abilities are crucial capital for facing an increasingly competitive job market that is no longer confined by a country’s geographical borders. One of the advantages of IR graduates is the breadth of career opportunities they can pursue. Besides becoming diplomats, embassy staff, or working in foreign ministries, IR graduates are also in high demand at international organisations, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), global research institutions, and multinational companies. Some popular career paths include international relations analyst, global policy consultant, international organisation staff, global public relations, corporate affairs specialist, international trade analyst, and positions in strategic communications and business diplomacy. The development of the digital era has also opened new opportunities for International Relations graduates, particularly in global digital issues such as cybersecurity, digital diplomacy, cross-border digital economy, and technology-based international communication. “Today’s global issues cannot be separated from technology. Digital diplomacy, information warfare, and digital platform-based economic cooperation are new challenges that modern IR graduates must understand,” Prof Wahyudi said. Beyond the wide career prospects, IR students are also equipped with various essential skills such as cross-cultural communication, global policy analysis, negotiation, public speaking, international research, and critical thinking on complex global issues. According to him, these skills make IR graduates not only relevant in the world of diplomacy but also adaptable across various other professional sectors. “IR graduates possess a global perspective. They are accustomed to reading world situations broadly, understanding the interests of various parties, and seeking strategic and sustainable solutions,” he stated. As a Creative Digital Campus, UBSI offers an IR Study Programme designed to address contemporary global challenges, with a curriculum aligned with international issue developments and modern professional world needs. To provide broader educational access to the public, the UBSI IR Study Programme is available in morning and afternoon class options at UBSI Margonda Campus, UBSI Kramat Campus, UBSI Kaliabang Campus, and UBSI Cikarang Campus. “We want to provide flexibility for the younger generation to pursue IR education without disrupting other activities.
