UBK Alumni Association Demands Strict Sanctions for Students Allegedly Accepting Bribes
The Bung Karno University Alumni Association (IKA UBK) has issued an apology and a statement demanding strict sanctions against students suspected of accepting bribes following a protest and meeting with the Vice President at the State Palace.
Achmad Boim, an advisor to IKA UBK, stated that the actions of the individuals claiming to represent UBK students were a fatal and deeply embarrassing mistake, carried out consciously and deliberately for the benefit of irresponsible parties.
‘We, IKA UBK, officially apologise to all students and the Indonesian people for the incident involving individuals acting in the name of UBK students, who made a very embarrassing mistake by consciously and deliberately accepting money from irresponsible parties during a demonstration after meeting the Vice President at the State Palace,’ he said in a statement in Jakarta on Thursday.
Responding to the uproar, IKA UBK is urging the rectorate to take concrete and firm action to safeguard the institution’s honour. ‘We firmly request the rectorate to summon and impose strict sanctions, including dismissal, on all students involved in accepting bribes from certain parties,’ he stated.
Boim also urged the rectorate to immediately form an independent team to thoroughly investigate the involvement of the students who tarnished the moral movement. Beyond internal campus matters, Boim highlighted the need for transparency from state authorities and law enforcement to restore the university’s good name.
‘We, IKA UBK, urge a commitment from the Vice President’s Palace to conduct a transparent clarification to thoroughly investigate the police officers who provided bribes to UBK students, in order to restore the campus’s image,’ he asserted.
As an alumni association of a university bearing the name of the Proclamator of Indonesian Independence, Boim reminded that UBK carries the ideology of Soekarno, a great figure who united and defended the people. Therefore, going forward, IKA UBK is committed to tightening controls and consistently promoting conscience-based moral movements within the campus environment.
Boim also appealed to all active students and alumni of UBK, wherever they may be, to remain united, calm, and not be provoked by parties deliberately creating unrest. ‘IKA UBK asks all our younger student siblings to remain united, to be at the forefront, and to remain consistently critical in defending the people’s struggle alongside students throughout Indonesia,’ he said.
