Ubisoft Cancels Six New Games, Including Prince of Persia and Assassin’s Creed Mobile
Ubisoft has cancelled six game projects that were in development, including the remake of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time and the mobile game Assassin’s Creed: Singularity.
This cancellation adds to the long list of projects that the company has halted in recent years.
The remake of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time was first announced in 2020. The project had experienced delays and changes in the development team before it was finally decided to cancel it.
In addition, Ubisoft has also stopped the development of several other internal projects, namely Project Ether, which has been in development since 2019, Project Pathfinder (previously known as Project U), and Project Crest, which was said to be a shooting game set in World War II.
The cancellation of these six games comes amid the pressure that Ubisoft has faced in recent years. The company recently announced layoffs of dozens of employees.
The game industry is known for its long development cycles and high risks. Changes in concept, budget overruns, and adjustments to business strategy are often factors behind the cancellation of projects.
Previously, there were also rumours about the cancellation of the Assassin’s Creed multi-mode game project.
However, amid the news of the cancellations, reports say that Ubisoft is still working on the remake of Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag.
The game is reportedly expected to launch as early as April this year, although there is no official confirmation regarding its release schedule. The game is highly anticipated by the gaming community, especially because of its popularity as one of the best series.
This move is part of the company’s efforts to focus resources on projects that are considered more strategic and have the potential to succeed in the market, as summarised by KompasTekno from Gizmochina.
Ubisoft is currently pressing the “major reset” button in its business strategy.
In January, the French game company announced the cancellation of game projects, the postponement of other titles, the closure of 2 studios, and the termination of employees as part of a major restructuring.
