UB focuses on "Smart Green Campus" to achieve sustainable campus status

Malang, East Java (ANTARA) - Universitas Brawintaya (UB) Malang, East Java, is focusing on the rollout of the Smart Green Campus programme as an effort to realise a sustainable campus.

“Our target is to become a role model for a sustainable campus, as a direction towards the net zero emissions that is currently being developed,” said the Head of the UB Green Campus Technical Implementation Unit (UPT), Prof. Sri Suhartini, at the rectorate building lobby on Friday.

Dozens of campus units have already implemented the programme, comprising 17 faculties, the UB Off-Campus Study Programme (PSDKU) in Kediri, the UB PSDKU in Jakarta, and the postgraduate programme.

The implementation of the programme focuses on five main indicators, which include the management of waste, water, energy, green transport, and green infrastructure.

She exemplified that for the water indicator, the focus must at least be on efficient usage and implementing conservation. Meanwhile, regarding waste, the emphasis is on reduction and management efforts.

“We hope that by next year, all units within Universitas Brawijaya can implement the Smart Green Campus programme,” she said.

Universitas Brawijaya has initiated a car-free day (CFD) within the campus environment to foster awareness and understanding among students regarding efforts to reduce carbon emissions, while simultaneously building a healthy lifestyle culture.

She mentioned that the car-free day programme will be collaborated with various activities, such as reintroducing traditional Indonesian toys to students.

“It is not yet regular, but at the very least, it has started; at least there is an activity every Friday,” she added.

It is expected that this series of strategies will strengthen Universitas Brawijaya’s contribution to the sustainable development goals initiated by the government, through the application of innovation and research results.
