UAE Apologises After Erroneous Missile Warning Sparks Panic

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) authorities issued an apology on Friday (26/6) after releasing an “erroneous warning message” regarding a potential missile attack. The mistaken missile alert briefly sparked concern among UAE residents. In the incident, an official message was sent to the mobile phones of UAE citizens warning of a “potential missile threat,” accompanied by a loud siren sound. This was the first such warning message received by UAE residents in more than a month. Such warning messages had become common during the height of the Middle East conflict, when Iran targeted the UAE with more than 2,800 drones and missiles, most of which were successfully intercepted. However, the warning issued on Friday was immediately followed by another instruction asking UAE residents to “ignore the previous warning.” The UAE emergency authority subsequently apologised for the error. “The National Emergency Crisis and Disaster Management Authority and the relevant authorities apologise for this unintentional technical malfunction,” read the apology from the UAE authority via social media platform X. It was further explained that the “sudden technical malfunction in the early warning system” had been “addressed by the relevant authorities.” The oil-rich UAE, like other Gulf states hosting United States (US) military forces, finds itself on the front line for potential Iranian retaliatory strikes against US and Israeli attacks that killed its supreme leader. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio visited Abu Dhabi this week as part of a tour aimed at reassuring the heavily affected Gulf states regarding peace negotiations with Iran.
