Indonesia’s renewable energy projects are increasingly attracting global attention. From the Cirata Reservoir in West Java, the green energy cooperation between Indonesia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is now moving towards a larger scale, in line with plans to expand investments in the solar power sector.

Amid the ongoing geopolitical dynamics in the Middle East, the UAE Ambassador to Indonesia, Abdulla Salem AlDhaheri, met with Deputy Speaker of the Indonesian People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR RI), Eddy Soeparno, at the parliamentary complex in Jakarta. This meeting is part of efforts to strengthen the strategic partnership between the two countries, particularly in the field of renewable energy.

Eddy explained that the meeting is a follow-up to previous intensive communications, including when he met the UAE Minister of Energy and special envoy of the UAE government to Indonesia, Suhail Al Mazrouei, in Abu Dhabi in January 2026.

According to Eddy, this cooperation does not stand alone. This year marks the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Indonesia and the UAE, a milestone that both countries are utilising to accelerate the realisation of various agreements, especially in the green energy sector.

One concrete symbol of this collaboration is the floating solar power plant (PLTS) project at Cirata in West Java, managed by the UAE’s clean energy company, Masdar. This project is not only a national pride but is also projected to develop into one of the largest in the world.

“The UAE has shown strong commitment in supporting the development of renewable energy in Indonesia, including plans to expand the floating solar panel project at Cirata,” said Eddy.

He assessed that the investment expansion plan aligns with the government’s major targets to accelerate the energy transition. President Prabowo Subianto, according to Eddy, is pushing for the development of up to 100 gigawatts (GW) of solar power as part of the strategy towards national energy independence.

UAE investment support is seen as a crucial catalyst to achieve that target. In addition to expanding clean energy capacity, this project also opens opportunities for technology transfer, enhancement of human resource capabilities, and strengthening Indonesia’s position in the global green energy supply chain.

Eddy added that the MPR RI is also continuing to push for strengthening the regulatory framework through the acceleration of discussions on several strategic bill drafts, such as the New and Renewable Energy Bill (EBET), the Oil and Gas Bill, and the Climate Change Management Bill.

Meanwhile, Abdulla Salem AlDhaheri expressed appreciation for Indonesia’s support of UAE investment initiatives in the clean energy sector. He reaffirmed his country’s commitment to continued involvement in supporting the acceleration of Indonesia’s energy transition.

“Our presence is to strengthen cooperation and to express thanks for the support of UAE’s involvement in developing renewable energy in Indonesia,” he said.

This cooperation underscores that amid global uncertainties, green energy has become a point of strategic interest convergence. From Cirata, Indonesia is not only building a power plant but also affirming its steps towards the world energy stage.
