JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com — Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung has clarified the issue regarding the proposal to relocate the Institut Kesenian Jakarta (IKJ) campus to the Kota Tua area in West Jakarta.

He emphasised that the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government (Pemprov DKI) will not move the campus there, but will instead provide spaces for expression for students and artists in the area.

According to Pramono, Pemprov DKI will indeed build special facilities in Kota Tua for IKJ students and artists. However, these facilities will not function as the main centre for teaching and learning activities of the campus.

He acknowledged that there will be buildings erected specifically for IKJ students and artists.

“But, after we reviewed it, we will not relocate IKJ, no,” he added.

According to Pramono, relocating the entire IKJ campus activities would conflict with the main vision of revitalising the Kota Tua area.

This is because Kota Tua is projected as a cultural tourism destination that emphasises the preservation of the heritage area.

“Because relocating IKJ would then (go against) the main purpose for Kota Tua as a place for us to maintain cultural tourism destinations. Kota Tua is actually like the Amsterdam of the Netherlands, Amsterdam type,” said Pramono.

The proposal is intended to make the Kota Tua area a centre for arts and cultural activities while strengthening the creative atmosphere in Jakarta’s heritage district.

“We will propose to the central government to relocate IKJ to this place (Kota Tua),” said Pramono Anung when met in Kota Tua, West Jakarta, on Saturday (18/10/2025).

He explained that this step is taken so that Kota Tua does not only function as a historical tourism area, but also becomes a living space for artists to create.

According to Pramono, the presence of IKJ students and artists will bring back to life the atmosphere of the heritage area that is currently being revitalised.

“This requires many artistic talents who can directly perform here, and I am confident that the creative space will become better, broader, and more expansive,” he stated.
