Tyres Key to Electric Vehicle Efficiency

Heavy traffic, particularly on the Trans Java route, poses a significant challenge for electric vehicle users during the Lebaran homecoming period. PT Jasa Marga projects approximately 3.6 million vehicles will depart the Greater Jakarta area during the 2026 Lebaran period, with peak traffic anticipated on 18 March 2026.

Beyond ensuring adequate charging infrastructure availability, drivers must pay careful attention to energy efficiency during long-distance travel. According to PT Hankook Tire Sales Indonesia, electric vehicle efficiency is not solely determined by battery capacity but also by vehicle component condition, particularly tyres—a factor often overlooked despite its direct impact on driving range.

Electric vehicles exhibit different characteristics compared to conventional vehicles. The substantial weight of the battery combined with instantaneous torque makes vehicles heavier, exerting greater pressure on tyres. During homecoming journeys, this load increases further due to passengers and luggage. If vehicles use conventional tyres not specifically designed for electric vehicles, rolling resistance increases significantly. This condition forces vehicles to consume considerably more energy to rotate the wheels, resulting in greater battery drain, especially in congested traffic conditions.

Consequently, pre-journey tyre inspections are crucial. Visual inspections should be conducted several weeks before departure, particularly if battery efficiency appears diminished or tyre noise becomes noticeably louder.

Apriyanto Yuwono, National Sales Manager for Passenger Car Radials at PT Hankook Tire Sales Indonesia, stated that selecting appropriate tyres can help maintain electric vehicle efficiency during long journeys. “Incorrect tyres not specifically designed for electric vehicle use will drain battery energy. If battery efficiency begins declining or tyre noise becomes more pronounced, this signals that rolling resistance is no longer optimal. Switching to electric vehicle-specific tyres designed for long-distance travel, such as iON ST AS models, offering durability and optimal driving range potential, represents a wise investment for family safety and comfort during extended holidays,” he said on Sunday (15 March).

Beyond tyre type, air pressure and vehicle load distribution are also important factors in maintaining performance during travel. Tyre pressure conforming to manufacturer recommendations helps maintain energy efficiency whilst minimising tyre wear.

Cabin comfort also merits attention, particularly during extended traffic congestion. As electric vehicles lack engine noise, tyre noise becomes more noticeable, making tyre quality an important factor in overall journey comfort.

With proper preparation, Lebaran homecoming journeys using electric vehicles can be conducted efficiently and comfortably, even in congested traffic conditions.
