A joint task force from the West Jakarta Municipal Government carried out a tyre-deflation operation, targeting 45 motorcycles parked illegally in the Glodok Chinatown area of Tamansari, West Jakarta.

In addition to cracking down on illegal parking during the Monday (23 February) operation, officers also removed a truckload of street vendors trading along the Glodok Chinatown pavements.

“This operation follows up on residents’ complaints about the proliferation of street vendors and illegal parking. The pavements have become increasingly narrow, causing discomfort for residents, particularly people with disabilities,” said Tamansari Sub-district Head Simson Hutagalung when contacted in Jakarta on Tuesday (24 February).

He said the enforcement action was also carried out pursuant to DKI Jakarta Regional Regulation (Perda) No. 8 of 2007 on Public Order.

“Pavements are not for trading — they are for pedestrians,” Simson stated.

During the operation, officers confiscated numerous street vendor fixtures, including wooden chairs, tarpaulin-covered tables and food carts.

“We successfully cleared street vendor stalls amounting to one truckload, as well as 45 motorcycles subjected to tyre deflation,” Simson said.

Following the crackdown on street vendors and illegal parking, authorities plan to deploy Civil Service Police Unit (Satpol PP) personnel to conduct surveillance patrols along the Glodok Chinatown pavements.

“The Glodok Village administration will also install banners displaying Regional Regulation No. 8 of 2007 on Public Order at various points along the Glodok Chinatown pavements,” Simson added.
