Typhoon `Fred' threatens RP

MANILA (AFP): Typhoon Fred, packing maximum winds of 120
kilometers (74 miles) an hour, was bearing down on the extreme
northern Philippines yesterday, the weather bureau here said.

Fred was moving west at 19 kilometers (12 miles) an hour and
was plotted at about 1,340 kilometers (830 miles) east of the
northern town of Aparri at 10:00 a.m. (0200 GMT) but it was not
expected to affect the country over the next 24 hours, the bureau
said.
