Tycoons' participation
Tycoons' participation
From Merdeka
The number of Indonesian business tycoons has reached 200. It
is strange that they do not participate in the government's
efforts to manage the economic crisis.
In the current crisis, a number of philanthropists and Armed
Forces members have come to the aid of the government. Large
contributors of gold were Bank Tabungan Negara with 12 kilograms,
the Southeast Sulawesi Regional Administration with 6 kgs and
many others collected nearly 30 kgs. Additionally, there were
numerous people who donated money, both rupiah and foreign
currencies.
A similar contribution took place during the fight toward
independence in 1945. Contributors included Sumitro
Djojohadikusumo's father with 10 kgs gold, Mohamad Hatta with
500,000 guilders, Indonesian Madura Salt Company with 20,000
guilders and the Indonesian State Railways with 30,000 guilders.
What now are the endeavors and the measures being taken by
government to overcome the dire economic crisis: the volatility
of the rupiah, foreign debts, debilitating purchasing power and
the high prices of food staples and other commodities?
