Residents of Jatisampurna, Bekasi City, were shocked by the death of a two-year-old baby identified as A in a rental house on Wednesday (27 May) evening around 10 PM.

The victim was living with two others in the house: her grandmother, identified as M (60), and her uncle, G (18). The uncle was also found with multiple injuries.

“Inside the rental house, there were two victims: the first was a baby approximately two and a half months old, whose death was particularly gruesome,” said Police Chief of Bekasi City Metropolitan Police, Kompol Andi Muhammad Iqbal, to reporters on Thursday (28 May).

“The other victim, the uncle, was found lying down with slash wounds on his cheek extending to his mouth and stab wounds on his chest,” he added.

Andi explained that during the incident, the grandmother was out selling goods and returned home in the evening. Upon arriving, she saw her child and grandchild lying in a pool of blood with a knife nearby.

“The grandmother was shocked but, on instinct, picked up the knife from one of the victims named G and washed it,” Iqbal said.

Iqbal stated that the police immediately launched an investigation. Initially, officers suspected the grandmother.

“After interrogation and further investigation, for now, the suspect is not the grandmother,” he said.

Iqbal said the current focus of the investigation is on the victim’s uncle, identified as G. Preliminary checks revealed G has a history of mental illness and is still taking medication regularly.

“After checking his record, he had been to a psychiatrist, as per witness testimonies during our interrogation, he had a mental health disorder,” he added.

Iqbal said the police are still trying to obtain statements from G. He stated that communicating with G is difficult due to his mouth injuries.

To date, police are still conducting in-depth investigations and have interviewed approximately 10 witnesses. Several pieces of evidence, including two knives and the victims’ clothing, have also been seized.
