Lebak Police have confirmed that two women with the initials NR and MT have been named as suspects in the alleged religious blasphemy case following their act of stepping on the Qur’an. Both have been immediately detained by the police. “They have been designated as suspects. Yes, they have been detained immediately,” said the Head of Public Relations of Lebak Police, Iptu Moestafa Ibnu Syafir, on Saturday (11/4/2026). Moestafa stated that the two suspects had consciously committed religious blasphemy by stepping on the holy book of Muslims. Not only that, the way they took the oath using the Qur’an did not comply with the provisions. “The method of swearing on the Qur’an is not like that, and what aggravates it is that the holy Qur’an is used for the oath; it should be above the head, not under the feet,” he said. “They clearly committed blasphemy intentionally. The motive is clear because they knew the Qur’an is a holy book, unless they are not Muslim,” he added. Moestafa said that suspect NR is charged under Article 301 or 300 or 305 jo Article 20 of Law No. 1 of 2023 jo Law No. 1 of 2026 on criminal adjustments. Meanwhile, MT is charged under Article 300 or 305 jo Article 20 of Law No. 1 of 2023, jo Law No. 1 of 2026 on criminal adjustments. Moestafa then suggested that if there is a dispute over alleged theft, it is better to report it to the police so that such incidents do not recur. “Both the one ordering and the one carrying out are wrong; pursue it through legal means,” he said. Regarding this incident, he urged the public to remain calm and not be provoked. He emphasised that Lebak Police have handled the case quickly and transparently. “Lebak Police have taken swift action in handling this case and have designated the suspects with the applied articles,” he concluded. It is known that a viral video circulated showing the actions of two women allegedly committing religious blasphemy by stepping on the Qur’an. Both have now been secured by the police. Based on the information received, the two women with initials NR and MT are residents of Sukaraja Village, Malingping Subdistrict, Lebak Regency. In the viral video, NR is seen forcing MT to swear by stepping on the Qur’an.
