Two Women in Bulukumba Go Viral for Disrespecting the Quran
Two women in Bulukumba District, South Sulawesi, were reported to police after allegedly disrespecting Quranic verses and going viral on social media.
“That’s correct, we have already taken several steps, including guidance through religious and community leaders,” said Bulukumba Police Chief AKBP Restu Wijayanto to CNNIndonesia.com on Thursday (26 February).
The case began when the two women distorted Quranic verses and interpreted them jokingly using the local dialect on Wednesday (25 February).
“It only went viral in Bulukumba. We received information verbally about the viral video from one of the religious leaders, so we immediately followed up by coordinating with the local government,” said Bulukumba Police Criminal Investigation Head Iptu Muhammad Ali.
Following the report, police immediately launched an investigation and the two women were secured. Police then held a meeting with religious leaders together with those who had insulted the Quran.
“They were given religious understanding, including Quranic verses with guidance from religious leaders and local government officials. Both have apologised and promised they will not repeat their actions,” he explained.
Ali stated that the two women have deleted the video and replaced it with an apology video.
“We hope that the community will not easily be provoked by this issue. Let us maintain a conducive situation, especially during the holy month of Ramadan,” he concluded.
