Two Water-Bombing Helicopters Deployed to Extinguish Jatiwaringin Landfill Fire
Joint officers are continuing efforts to extinguish a fire at the Jatiwaringin Final Processing Site (TPA) in Mauk District, Tangerang Regency, Banten. Aerial operations are set to resume today with two helicopters.
“To strengthen the response, BNPB has deployed two helicopters to support aerial operations. One helicopter conducted a single sortie on Wednesday afternoon, while the other has been mobilised and is now ready for operation,” said Abdul Muhari, Head of the BNPB Disaster Data, Information, and Communication Centre, on Thursday (2/7/2026).
Firefighting efforts at the Jatiwaringin TPA are being carried out intensively through both ground and aerial operations. On the ground, the Tangerang Regency Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), along with local government elements and relevant regional apparatus organisations, continues to fight the fire via land routes in areas still accessible to fire engines.
Dozens of people have been displaced by the fire, which started on Tuesday (30/6) afternoon. Their logistical needs are being met by the Tangerang Regency Government.
“The BPBD has also conducted a rapid assessment, coordinated with the local government, distributed aid in the form of 46 mattresses to affected residents, and placed health teams on standby for 24 hours,” he stated.
The firefighting process still faces several obstacles. The fire point is located at the peak of the waste pile at a high elevation, making it difficult to reach from the ground.
“Additionally, the highly flammable waste material causes the fire to keep burning and produces thick smoke that disturbs residential areas. Currently, the Jatiwaringin TPA site still requires simultaneous ground and air operations. To strengthen coordination in handling the impact on the community, it is necessary to involve more stakeholders through the activation of a Command Post,” he added.
The Tangerang Regency Government has declared a State of Emergency for the Jatiwaringin TPA Fire Disaster through Tangerang Regent Decree Number 609 of 2026, effective from 1 to 14 July 2026. All relevant parties continue to synergise to accelerate fire control and minimise the impact on the community and the environment.
“BNPB urges residents around the fire location to reduce outdoor activities unless urgent, especially when smoke exposure increases. Residents are also advised to wear masks when outdoors, protect vulnerable groups such as toddlers, the elderly, and people with respiratory illnesses from smoke exposure, and follow instructions from officers if evacuation or further handling is required,” he said.
BNPB urges the public to remain calm, not to easily trust or spread unverified information, and to continue monitoring official information from the government and authorised agencies.
