Two Villages Involved in Clash in Central Halmahera Agree to Peace
Residents of Banemo Village and Sibenpopo Village in West Patani sub-district, Central Halmahera Regency, North Maluku, who clashed a few days ago, agreed to peace on Tuesday afternoon (7/4). The reconciliation process took place in a familial atmosphere. The local government, TNI-Polri apparatus, and community leaders were brought together in one forum to find the best solution. As a result, both parties committed to resolving issues peacefully and rejecting all forms of violence in the future. The Regent of Central Halmahera, Ikram M. Sangadji, emphasised that the government, along with TNI-Polri, was present as facilitators to reunite the community that had been divided. “The government together with TNI-Polri has facilitated this meeting. Alhamdulillah, it went well and was able to unite various previously unresolved issues. From here, we weave back togetherness into one strength to move forward, build the region, and nurture unity in the midst of society,” said Ikram during the peace meeting. Meanwhile, the North Maluku Police Chief, Inspector General Waris Agono, stated that his side, along with the TNI, is committed to securing the area while opening space for dialogue between the two village groups. Waris said the murder case that led to the inter-village clash in Central Halmahera is not related to ethnic, religious, racial, or inter-group issues (SARA). He stated that the incident was allegedly triggered by provocation and unverified information. He said the clash was purely an inter-village matter that should be resolved wisely. He also invited all parties to leave behind the conflict. “The most important thing is how we can all return to living in peace. Because peace is cool, peace is calming,” he said. Previously, the clash resulted in one person dead and dozens of residents’ houses damaged. Some valuables were not even saved and were burned to ashes. The local government urged the public to remain calm and not easily provoked by unclear issues. Residents were also asked to continue maintaining unity and harmony to prevent similar incidents from recurring. This peace becomes new hope for the neighbouring village communities in West Patani. From the conflict that occurred, space is now reopened for unity, strengthening togetherness, and building a better future.
