Two Unram Lecturers Reported for Alleged Verbal Harassment of Female Students
Two lecturers at the University of Mataram (Unram) in West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) are alleged to have committed verbal sexual harassment against several female students. Four students, who are suspected victims of the harassment, have reported the two lecturers to the Unram Sexual Violence Prevention and Handling Task Force (PPKS).
The Chairman of the Unram PPKS Task Force, Joko Jumadi, confirmed the existence of complaints regarding the two lecturers suspected of verbal sexual harassment. According to him, both lecturers teach at the Faculty of Law, Social and Political Sciences (FHISIP) at Unram.
“It is true that two lecturers have been reported. One is being reported by three victims, and the other has one complainant so far,” Joko stated on Monday (18/05/2026).
Joko revealed that the two lecturers allegedly uttered sexually explicit remarks while teaching in class. Furthermore, the victims also claimed that the lecturers engaged in sensual flirting via WhatsApp messages.
“It is primarily sexist jokes and (lewd) flirting. Therefore, these actions fall into the category of sexual violence,” said Joko Jumadi.
Joko noted that the PPKS Task Force has taken statements from several witnesses regarding the alleged sexual violence, including witnesses from the victims’ side and one person from the reported party.
“The modus operandi is presented as mere jokes. Some occurred online and some offline. During teaching, they also made sensual jokes intended to break the ice. Therefore, we do not yet know the motive,” he added.
According to Joko, the perpetrators also engaged in verbal sexual violence outside of teaching hours. He mentioned that the sexist jokes expressed by the lecturers pointed towards indications of intimate relations.
“Even if they are jokes, they cannot be allowed. However, it has not escalated to physical violence,” Joko added.
Currently, the reporting process for the two lecturers is ongoing. The Unram PPKS Task Force is also scheduling sessions to interrogate the lecturers. “We have examined one person. We have yet to examine the other,” he concluded.
