Two Unnes Lecturers Teach Indonesian Language in China

Semarang (ANTARA) - Two lecturers from the Indonesian Language and Literature Education Study Programme of the Faculty of Languages and Arts (FBS) at Semarang State University (Unnes) have become guest lecturers at Fuzhou University in China, teaching the Indonesian language.

The two lecturers are Dr Imam Baehaqie, a lecturer in the Master’s programme for Indonesian Language Education, and Dr Wati Istanti, a lecturer in the Indonesian Language and Literature Education Study Programme.

“This activity marks the initiation of a collaborative partnership, particularly in the field of legal language, given that Fuzhou University’s School of Law offers an International Law course,” Wati said in a statement issued in Semarang on Friday.

The two Unnes lecturers were received by the Dean of Fuzhou University’s Faculty of Law, Prof Li Zhi, and the Head of Fuzhou University’s International Office, Prof Shao.

They carried out the visiting lecturer programme at Fuzhou University in China from 30 June to 1 July 2024.

Fuzhou University has a law faculty that studies international law, including that of Indonesia.

“An introduction to Indonesian language and culture needs to be provided to Fuzhou University students to equip them to understand that legal context,” she said.

Meanwhile, Unnes Head of Public Relations Rahmat Petuguran said the presence of the two Unnes lecturers at Fuzhou University is expected to open up broader academic cooperation.

He noted that both Fuzhou University and Unnes share the same interest in developing linguistic scholarship.

Through its Indonesian Language and Literature Study Programme, Unnes has a long track record of strengthening cultural diplomacy through language.

In addition to having a Centre for Indonesian Language Studies for Foreign Speakers (BIPA), Unnes has also sent its teachers abroad on several occasions.

During their exchange, they also taught Indonesian at the destination university.
