JAKARTA – The advancement of the electric motorcycle conversion programme in Indonesia is inseparable from conversion workshops. However, the development of these workshops has yet to reach its full potential.

Founder of Bintang Racing Team, Tomy Huang, explained that conversion workshops do not originate from a single pathway.

According to him, there are two primary backgrounds that underpin the establishment of electric motorcycle conversion workshops.

“Second, petrol motorcycle workshops that wish to add skills, thus also becoming conversion workshops. So, conversion workshops come in two types,” said Tomy.

According to Tomy, the number of truly certified conversion workshops is still limited at present.

“Well, for the number of conversion workshops, as far as I recall, those that have obtained certification,” he said.

On the other hand, industry players in conversions also face several challenges. Abdul from Dolland Motor Electric stated that the biggest obstacle does not come from technical aspects, but from administration.

He explained that although he already holds certification as a conversion mechanic, this is not sufficient to operate a workshop independently.

“So, in terms of mechanic certification, I have obtained certification from the Ministry of Manpower. I myself also have a certificate to perform conversions from petrol motorcycles to electric motorcycles. However, my own workshop cannot yet, so I have to collaborate or ‘piggyback’ with other workshops, usually with BRT,” he said.

Abdul added that many people still do not understand that mechanic certification and workshop certification are two different things.

In addition, converted motorcycles must also obtain a Type Test Certificate (SUT) and Type Test Registration Certificate (SRUT).

After all requirements are met, the workshop will undergo a verification process before finally receiving an official certificate as a Conversion Workshop.

The list of certified workshops can be accessed through the official website of the Ministry of Transportation.
