Two tried for rioting
NABIRE, Irian Jaya: Two men were charged in court yesterday for their role in a riot in July in which several government buildings were set on fire.
Prosecutors said Decky Ikomari, 22, and Yosia Pakage, led an attack on the Nabire regency government buildings, Antara reported.
Seriously damaged in the rioting were the legislative council building, the regent's office, the telecommunications office and courthouse.
The riot in Nabire, 3,150 kilometers (1,960 miles) northeast of Jakarta involved 3,000 disgruntled civil service job applicants.
The jobseekers began rioting after they heard rumors that 95 percent of the 127 job openings available for Paniai residents had already been filled. (pan)
