MANILA (AFP): Two ethnic Chinese-Filipino traders were
kidnapped by heavily armed men in downtown Manila, police said
yesterday.
Kok Ko, Edward Sy and a Filipina housemaid identified only as
Sharon were forced into a car late Wednesday by the unidentified
men wielding armalite rifles along Quezon boulevard in the
commercial district of Quiapo, police said quoting witnesses.
Police are still determining if a ransom is being demanded by
the kidnappers for the victims' release.
The kidnap came amid assurances from President Fidel Ramos'
last Wednesday to that police protection had been stepped up for
members of the ethnic Chinese community amid a spate of killings
in Manila's Chinatown and surrounding areas.
