Two tankers collide in Surabaya

SURABAYA: Two oil tankers, the MR-1 and NCC Madina, collided a little after midnight near Tanjung Perak port here on Thursday, leaving two people injured and a toddler missing.

The head of public services at state-owned port management firm PT Pelabuhan Indonesia III Utopo said that those injured in the collision were treated at nearby Pelabuhan Surabaya Hospital. The missing toddler is a child of one of members of the crew.

The accident occurred as the MR-1 entered the port after sailing back from Cirebon, West Java, and collided with the NCC Madina, which had just got back from Petrokimia port, Gresik, in East Java.

The collision left the smaller MR-1 badly damaged, but there was no significant damage done to the NCC Madina.

Utopo said that the flashing buoys and all the signs were functioning as usual. -- Antara
