Two suspected causes for UGM student and family's fatal tent incident in Temanggung

French Literature student at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) Bagas Amar Hakiki (21) and his parents and younger sibling were found dead in a tent in the Kledung area of Temanggung. Police have revealed two suspected causes for the deaths of Bagas and his family. Authorities suspect the victims died from food poisoning or gas from barbecue combustion. This was stated following an autopsy on Bagas’s younger brother, Alvino Evan Hakim, on Thursday, 28 May 2026. ‘Initial examination results based on the doctor’s report suggest two strong possibilities: food poisoning and gas poisoning from combustion,’ said Iptu I Komang Mahendra Deputra, Head of Criminal Investigation at Temanggung Police, to reporters at the Temanggung Police station’s Lobil on Friday, 29 May 2026, according to detikJateng. Komang revealed a portable gas stove and a clay furnace for burning briquettes were found in the tent where Bagas and his family were staying. Food samples including leftover meat, sausages, vegetables, and white rice were also tested as part of the investigation. ‘The portable gas stove at the scene was found turned off. After conducting investigations inside and outside the tent, no traces of vomit or other evidence were discovered,’ Komang said. Investigators have processed the crime scene. The portable stove was located on the tent’s porch. ‘It is suspected that carbon monoxide (CO) from the combustion process rose and entered the tent. The tent, shaped like a pyramid, likely trapped the smoke from burning,’ he explained. ‘After cooking, when resting, the gas or smoke remained trapped inside the tent. The entrance and side vents were tightly closed. The Central Java Police Medical Department suspects combustion gases. It is possible the victims inhaled these continuously, leading to their deaths,’ he added. The portable stove was brought by the victims themselves. The tent’s facilities consisted of only two mattresses, sleeping bags, and no heating equipment. ‘There was no heating device or water heater inside the tent,’ he stated. The family’s bodies were discovered by staff on Wednesday, 27 May, while conducting a check-out reminder. After receiving no response, staff opened the tent and found all four victims deceased. The four victims were Muhammad Ali Munawar (52), Alvino Evan Hakim (17), Bagas Amar Hakiki (21), and a woman identified as Maghfirah (43). All were residents of Panjang Village, Ambarawa Subdistrict, Semarang Regency.
