Two students from the Sekolah Garuda programme have successfully obtained scholarships to pursue undergraduate (S1) degrees at Wageningen University in the Netherlands. The recipients, Muhammad Rafa Alfalah Dermawan and Amelia Febriani Rachman, are students at SMAN Unggulan MH Thamrin in East Jakarta, a school that is part of the government-initiated Sekolah Garuda programme.

Rafa shared his experience of adapting to the boarding school environment, noting the initial culture shock of living independently and the intensive study schedule, which includes evening classes until 9:30 PM on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Amelia also recounted her early struggles adapting to the high academic standards and pace, but emphasised the supportive environment where peers and seniors helped her adjust. Rafa added that there is virtually no seniority culture at the school, with alumni also providing mentorship.

Both students faced challenges in pursuing their dream of studying abroad. Amelia revealed that her parents were initially hesitant, but she persistently explained her motivations until they eventually supported her decision. Rafa explained that his family’s financial situation, categorised in a higher income bracket, meant that tuition fees would have been unaffordable without the scholarship. He expressed relief and gratitude that the Beasiswa Garuda fully covered his costs, easing his parents’ financial burden.

Looking ahead, both students are committed to returning to Indonesia to apply their knowledge. Rafa stated his ambition to become the Minister of Environment, while Amelia plans to work in the environmental field, possibly specialising in technology or policy after exploring her study options at the university.
