Two seeded girl players tumble in junior c'ships

JAKARTA (JP): Two girls' U-18 singles seeds crashed out in the 2000 Nabisco International Junior Championships at the Senayan tennis complex on Wednesday while all of the Indonesian boy's singles cruised into the quarterfinals.

Second seed Pichaya Laosirichon of Thailand had to make an early exit after being upset by Indonesian hopeful Linda Arumsari 6-4, 0-6, 1-6.

Linda will meet compatriot Stella Sondang, who also caused a surprise by thrashing fifth seed Dian Anggraini 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.

Top seed Hsieh Su-wei of Chinese Taipei went through to the next round after a comfortable victory over Yella Megasari 6-0, 6-2.

Hsieh will face seventh seed Diana Julianto of Indonesia, who beat teammate Septi Nindya Yutami 6-0, 6-4.

Fourth seed Sasha Abraham of Indonesia barely flexed her muscles to beat Wang Nai-yu of Chinese Taipei 6-0, 6-1. Sasha will meet compatriot Sandy Gumulya, who outclassed sixth seed Maya Rosa 6-2, 6-3.

Third seed Tiffany Welford of Australia also advanced to the last eight after an easy 6-0, 6-1 win over Indonesian Lisa Mariana. Welford will face eighth seed Novianti Warsono of Indonesia, who had no difficulty in eliminating Yang Cheng-I of Chinese Taipei 6-0, 6-1.

In the boy's singles event, top seed Eko Kurniawan overwhelmed Christian Adinata 6-0, 6-0 and will now meet sixth seed Clint Letcher of Australia. Letcher beat Indonesian Anthony Tan 6-1, 6- 0.

Second seed Eko Putra also moved forward after outplaying Imanuel Prabowo 6-3, 6-0. On Thursday, Eko will meet fifth seed Al Imron, who beat Hsieh Yu-da of Taipei 3-6, 6-3, 6-1.

Rahul Rajkhewa of India, seeded third in the event, will face Malaysian Dannio Yahya in the top eight on Thursday. Rajkhewa beat Indonesian Claudio Bramanta 6-1, 6-2 and Yahya outclassed Ferdinand Leon of Indonesia 6-0, 6-4.

Eighth seed Aravindha K. Prakash beat Yopi Hadikusuma 6-3, 4- 6, 6-4 to meet Indonesian Henry Davin Teja on Thursday. Henry, seeded fourth in this event, beat Sunu Wahyu Trijati 6-1, 6-1.

In the Under-16 boy's singles event, Christian, who is seeded no. 1, made his way to the semifinals after beating Neils Kusumahadi 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 on Wednesday. He will meet fifth seed A. Jonathan Amdanu, who defeated fourth seed Tio Lana Putra 6-4, 6- 2.

Another semifinals match will pit third seed Fachry Syahputra and second seed Imanuel Prakoso. Fachry beat Tan 6-2, 7-5 while Prakoso beat Ichwan Rizaldi 6-4, 4-6, 6-1. There were no foreign participants in this event.

In the girl's singles event, top seed Lisa will meet Devina Saedi in Thursday's semis. Lisa beat Chintha Karrie 6-1, 6-2 while Devina defeated Sonya Kumar of Singapore 2-6, 6-4, 6-3.

The other match will pit Monica Aryani with second seed Yella. Monica beat third seed Meritus Fitria Gani 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 while Megasari outshone Mega Margaretha 6-4, 6-3.

The second round and the quarterfinals of the U-16 and U-14 groups were held simultaneously on Wednesday as the Indonesian Tennis Association (Pelti) wished to end the competition on Friday. (ivy)
