Two robbers arrested

JAKARTA (JP): Police yesterday arrested two of the three men who allegedly robbed a passenger of a bajaj (three-wheeled public transport vehicle) in Central Jakarta.

The passenger, Kati, lost Rp 75,000 (US$32.18), a gold necklace and a wristwatch in the theft on Jl. Subur, the Gambir district.

City Police Spokesman Maj. Nyoman Suriasta said the robbers, identified as Basir, Firmansyah and Roy, stopped the bajaj and threatened the driver and the victim, with machetes.

"One of the suspects relieved Kati, who is a private company employee, of her necklace, wristwatch and wallet. The victim screamed for help as the criminals fled the scene," Nyoman said.

Alerted by the victim's scream, he said, residents and security guards in the area rushed to the scene and found the suspects counting the stolen money in a nearby field.

They caught Basri, 20, and Firmansyah, 18, while Roy managed to escape, Nyoman said.

All three suspects who live on Jl. Setia Kawan, Duri Pulo sub- district, in Central Jakarta are unemployed. (jun)
