Two RI maids jailed for baby's death

SINGAPORE: Two Indonesian maids who regularly force-fed an infant in their care were each jailed for nine months after pleading guilty to causing the death of the child, who choked on food, a report said on Sunday.

One of the maids would pinch the 21-month-old baby's nose to force him to open his mouth while the other shoved in the food, the Straits Times reported.

They had been doing this for eight months, but in December the infant choked. He was taken to hospital where he died three days later of bronchopneumonia caused by food entering his lungs, the report said.

A medical report said the boy had choked from food in his windpipe. A post-mortem report said the boy had also inhaled "foreign material" several weeks before his death, the Straits Times said. --AFP
