Two People Shot Dead in Land Dispute Clash in Batam

Two groups of residents clashed in the Setokok area of Bulang District, Batam, Riau Islands (Kepri). Two people died from gunshot wounds sustained in the confrontation.

The Riau Islands Regional Police Chief, Inspector General Asep Safrudin, confirmed that two victims had died in the incident. He said he had visited the hospital to check on the victims’ condition.

“That’s right, I went to the hospital earlier (yesterday),” Asep said when asked for confirmation about reports of two deaths from gunshot wounds on Monday (14/9/2026).

The clash reportedly broke out at around 4.30pm local time. Police officers are currently at the scene to investigate the confrontation.

Six people arrested

Police arrested six people in connection with the clash. The confrontation, triggered by a land conflict, left two people dead and ten others injured.

The clash stemmed from a land ownership dispute that had been running for quite some time. According to the police, various mitigation measures had previously been taken to prevent conflict.

“This began because of a land problem, an issue that has been going on for quite a long time. We, from the Barelang Resort Police and the Regional Police, have carried out mitigation measures,” said the Barelang Resort Police Chief, Senior Commissioner Anggoro Wicaksono, quoted by detikSumut on Tuesday (15/9).
