Two people killed after being struck by train in Karawang
Karawang (ANTARA) - Two people were reported dead after being struck by the Parahyangan train travelling from Gambir to Bandung at a level crossing in a narrow lane near Warung Bambu village, East Karawang district, Karawang regency, West Java, on Sunday.
Franoto Wibowo, public relations manager for KAI’s Jakarta regional operations area, expressed his condolences to the victims’ families and stressed the importance of observing safety rules near railway lines.
“We extend our deepest condolences to the victims’ families,” he said.
He said the incident was a reminder that safety at railway crossings must be a shared concern.
The incident took place on Sunday afternoon at an unauthorised level crossing at kilometre 67+400–500, between Karawang and Klari stations.
According to information received, the victims—a man and a woman from Warung Bambu village, East Karawang district—were riding a motorbike. Both were pronounced dead at the scene after being struck by the train.
After receiving the report, railway police and other security personnel went to the scene to respond and secure the area.
KAI also co-ordinated with the police and local authorities. Police officers later transported the victims to Karawang Regional General Hospital, accompanied by their families.
The Parahyangan train’s driver was said to have sounded the “Semboyan 35” warning signal before the incident.
Franoto said the full sequence of events and the cause of the incident were still being investigated by the authorities.
The incident also delayed two train services: the Parahyangan by 18 minutes and train 40 Sembrani by 13 minutes.
“The total reported delay was 31 minutes,” he said.
KAI’s Jakarta regional operations area reminded the public that trains require a long distance to brake and cannot stop suddenly when an obstruction is on the track. Road users should therefore prioritise safety and make sure it is safe before crossing railway lines, using only authorised crossings.
To prevent similar incidents, KAI’s Jakarta regional operations area, together with the local government, local authorities, police and other relevant parties, has closed the unauthorised crossing.
The public was also urged to take care when approaching level crossings: stop, look both ways to ensure no train is coming, and then cross.
