Two People Die After Being Swept Away by Floods in Semarang
Two people became victims of the floods that hit the city of Semarang on Friday (May 15) night. As of Saturday (May 16) morning, two women were found dead after being swept away by floodwaters in western Semarang.
The second victim was found by a joint team on Saturday morning at around 07:46 WIB. The victim was identified as Maryam, a resident of Mangkang Kulon Village, Tugu District. Her body was found behind a resident’s house, about 1 kilometer from the point where she was first reported missing.
The head of the Tugu Police, Kompol Fajar Widyanto, confirmed that the victim was allegedly swept away by the current when a 40-meter section of the Plumbon River embankment collapsed.
“The victim lived right in front of the collapsed embankment. At the time of the incident, the victim was allegedly outside the house to monitor the condition of the river, but unfortunately, she was swept away by the current into the rice fields and fish ponds,” said Fajar on Saturday (May 16).
Before Maryam was found, the SAR team had evacuated the body of Kurnia Suci Marsella (22) on Friday (May 15) night. The resident of Purwosari, North Semarang, was found dead in the Purwosari Village area, Ngaliyan District.
The head of the Ngaliyan Police, Kompol Aliet Alphard, said that the victim was on her way to work in the Candi Industrial Area on a scooter. “Heavy rain caused the Silandak River to overflow onto the road with a height of more than 1 meter. The victim, who was passing by, was swept away by the strong current,” said Aliet.
The head of the Semarang SAR Office Rescue Team, Nur Mustofa, added that when the victim was found, her physical condition was already bluish due to being submerged in water for too long. “The victim was found lying face down. Her outer clothing was even torn off due to the strong current,” he added.
The collapse of the 40-meter section of the Plumbon River embankment is the main focus of this disaster. The strong water discharge from upstream areas combined with heavy local rainfall in Semarang is believed to be the main cause of the collapse of the water retaining wall.
As of this report, the joint team is still on standby at the affected locations to anticipate further reports of missing persons and assist in the process of cleaning up the remaining flood debris in residential areas. (H-4)
