Jayapura (ANTARA) - Two Buddhist inmates in Papua have received special remission for Vesak Day 2570 Buddhist Era (BE) 2026. The two prisoners granted Special Remission I (RK I), reducing part of their sentences, are from Jayapura Class IIA Narcotics Prison and Biak Class IIB Prison, one each. “The special remission for Buddhist inmates was granted as they met the administrative and substantive requirements under applicable regulations,” said Herman Mulawarman, Head of the Papua Regional Office of the Directorate General of Corrections (Ditjenpas), in a press release received by ANTARA in Jayapura on Sunday. “The policy has resulted in savings of Rp840,525,000 for inmate meals and Rp2,145,000 for juvenile detainees’ meals,” he added. He explained that the remission granted to inmates in Papua is tangible proof that rehabilitation programs within the corrections system are ongoing and yielding measurable results. He added that nationwide, the Directorate General of Corrections granted special remission and special sentence reduction for Vesak 2026 to 1,052 Buddhist inmates and juvenile detainees. Of this number, 1,047 prisoners received Vesak special remission: 1,041 received RK I, six received RK II (immediate release), while five juvenile detainees were granted special sentence reduction I.
