Two of Nadiem's Lawyers Reported to PERADI Honour Council

The Indonesian Civil Society Anti-Corruption Network (Jamsaki) has reported two lawyers representing former Minister of Education, Culture, Research and Technology Nadiem Makarim to the Honour Council of the Indonesian Advocates Association (PERADI). The report concerns a statement made during the sentencing hearing for the Chromebook corruption case at the Jakarta Central Corruption Court on Tuesday (30/6).

Jamsaki spokesperson Umar Yuli Abbas identified the two lawyers as Dodi S. Abdul Kadir and Ari Yusuf Amir. The report relates to the lawyers’ remark, “Why must it be rushed, Your Honour, are you afraid?” which was directed at the panel of judges during the verdict reading.

Umar stated that the statement by the two lawyers was considered to be in violation of Article 269 of the Criminal Procedure Code (KUHAP) and demeaned the decorum of the courtroom and the dignity of the judiciary. “Submitting a complaint to the PERADI Honour Council is a form of public participation in safeguarding the dignity of the advocate profession,” Umar said in a statement on Monday (6/7/2026).

He explained that while the freedom of advocates to defend their clients’ interests is part of the justice system, this freedom must be exercised alongside the obligation to uphold decency, respect for the court, and compliance with the Advocates’ Code of Ethics. “Differences of opinion in the courtroom must be conveyed professionally, ethically, and with mutual respect,” he added.

In addition to the ethical complaint, Jamsaki has requested that the High Court revoke the practising licences of the two lawyers as a firm action against the alleged ethical violation, which they claim has tarnished the image of the judiciary in the public eye. Umar emphasised that the complaint is the beginning of an examination process to determine whether a violation of the code of ethics has indeed occurred, not a judgment of guilt.
