Jakarta (ANTARA) — Two motorcycle thieves identified by their initials RA (35) and MN (28) were apprehended by local residents whilst attempting to steal a motorcycle belonging to a victim identified as SW (35) in front of Warung Bu Kris on Jalan Boulevard Timur, Pegangsaan Dua subdistrict, Kelapa Gading district, North Jakarta.

The incident occurred on Wednesday (18 February) at approximately 8.30pm local time. The case is being handled by the Kelapa Gading Police Sector.

"We arrested the two suspects after they were detained by residents on suspicion of committing aggravated theft at the location," said Head of the Criminal Investigation Unit at Kelapa Gading Police Sector, AKP Kiki Tanlim, in Jakarta on Thursday.

Both suspects have been charged under Article 477 of Law No. 1 of 2023 concerning the Criminal Code (KUHP), which carries a maximum penalty of nine years' imprisonment.

The attempted theft occurred as the victim was about to park their vehicle. Upon arriving at the location, a witness who serves as a parking attendant was organising motorcycle parking.

"The victim saw the attendant arranging vehicles and tried to assist. Moments later, the parking attendant suddenly noticed the victim's motorcycle was about to be taken by the suspects," he said.

The victim immediately shouted for help whilst the suspects attempted to flee on their own motorcycle. "One suspect was on the motorcycle whilst the other tried to take the target vehicle but failed," he said.

As both suspects attempted to escape, a third witness at the scene immediately blocked the motorcycle and apprehended the pair. "The suspects were ultimately detained by residents and handed over to officers for further processing," he said.

The Criminal Investigation Unit of Kelapa Gading Police Sector, upon receiving the information, immediately proceeded to the location and conducted a crime scene examination.

Officers also recorded witness statements and carried out questioning of the suspects and several witnesses.

"We secured evidence including one T-shaped key and one pointed key blank used to forcibly open the motorcycle ignition," he said.

Authorities also seized two mobile phones, one motorcycle key, one motorcycle used by the suspects, and one motorcycle belonging to the victim as evidence.

"Both suspects and the evidence have been taken to Kelapa Gading Police Sector for further processing," he said.
