Two motorcycle thieves in South Jakarta (Jaksel) were set upon by a mob. Both perpetrators fell whilst fleeing after being caught attempting to steal a resident’s motorbike.

The moment the two motorcycle theft (curanmor) suspects were apprehended by residents went viral on social media. A number of men surrounded the two perpetrators.

Some men vented their anger by beating the two thieves, whilst other residents attempted to restrain those who became overly emotional towards the suspects.

The incident occurred on Jalan Karbela, Karet, Setiabudi, South Jakarta, on Sunday (19/7) at midday. The perpetrators nearly made off with a resident’s motorbike before being spotted and attempting to escape.

“The two perpetrators arrived riding together on one motorbike. One carried out the theft and the other kept watch from his own motorbike,” said the Head of Public Relations for South Jakarta Metropolitan Police Resort, AKP Joko Adi Wibowo, on Tuesday (21/7).

The motorbike was started and the theft was discovered by residents, who shouted at the perpetrators, identified as LM and NS. Both fell whilst trying to flee from pursuing residents after crashing into a rubbish bin.

“The perpetrators tried to flee after being shouted at by residents. They abandoned the stolen motorbike and attempted to escape together, but crashed into a rubbish bin and fell. They were caught by residents, then set upon by the mob,” he said.

A machete, a T-wrench and two lock keys were found on the two suspected perpetrators. Both sustained numerous injuries and were taken to hospital for medical treatment before facing further legal proceedings.

“The evidence found indicates a criminal offence. Residents were emotional at the time, and the perpetrators were badly beaten. The perpetrators were secured and are being treated at the National Police Hospital. The case is being handled by Setiabudi Metropolitan Police,” he said.
