Jakarta — The issue of substantial deductions from Eid allowances (THR) received by contract workers hired by the Jakarta Provincial Government has become a subject of widespread discussion.

Several workers have lodged complaints about the significantly reduced nominal value of their THR due to tax deductions reaching between one to two million rupiah.

“I’m upset about the THR amount because of the large deduction, nearly 1.2 million rupiah,” said Liman (32), a contract worker in Jakarta, when contacted on Wednesday (11 March 2026).

He even drew a comparison with civil servants (ASN), noting that they do not appear to face similar deductions.

“It’s quite painful. Contract workers face substantial deductions, but civil servants aren’t subject to tax. It seems as though contract workers are paying the tax for civil servants,” he said.

Similar complaints were voiced by Romudin, who said he was shocked when he saw the THR amount credited to his account on Tuesday (10 March 2026).

Romudin calculated that his THR had been reduced by as much as 1.9 million rupiah from the amount he was supposed to receive.

According to him, whilst there had been tax deductions in previous years, they were not as substantial as this year.

“In previous years there were deductions too, but normally it was only hundreds of thousands of rupiah,” he added.

Romudin noted that typically THR is used to share with family and relatives during Lebaran. However, this time he has had to change his plans.

“But now I have to use it for my life expenses after Lebaran,” he said.

Despite his concerns, he acknowledged that he was not opposed to the deductions provided their purpose was transparent.

“If the deduction has a clear purpose, such as compulsory basic education, I accept it,” he said.
