Two men jailed for carrying grenades
JAKARTA (JP): South Jakarta District Court has sentenced two men to two years in jail for carrying grenades during a religious festival attended by President Soeharto.
The men, identified as SA, 32, and AZ, 31, were arrested by security officials at the National Monument park in Central Jakarta on Feb. 8 during a performance to mark the end of the Moslem fasting month, the judges said Monday.
Antara news agency quoted the judges as saying that the men planned to explode the grenades during the event, which featured religious music and poetry recitals and was attended by thousands of people.
The sentences were one year lighter than the recommendation made by prosecutor Sugiyanto.
The two defendants' lawyers said they will appeal. (hhr)
