Two Lives Racing Against Time in the Komodo Strait

Dian Lestari’s struggle to embrace her first child involved a severe ordeal amid the limited medical facilities of the archipelago. After hours of enduring intense contractions, the young mother from Komodo Island saw her hopes stalled by a life-threatening medical condition. Full cervical dilation, achieved on Monday (6/7) at 11:30 WITA, did not result in birth. Her body began to tire, her strength to push was waning, while the risk to the foetus increased as time passed. This emergency triggered a rapid response from PADAR Heritage Conservation (PHC). The institution, under the auspices of the Artha Graha Peduli Foundation, once again carried out a humanitarian mission by evacuating Dian Lestari to Komodo Regional General Hospital in Labuan Bajo, West Manggarai Regency, East Nusa Tenggara, to receive urgent advanced medical care. The evacuation was conducted based on an urgent request from health workers at the Komodo Community Health Centre. At 15:08 WITA, PHC Public Relations officer Yoanna Daely received an emergency report from Dr. Andreas, who was directly handling the patient. Based on the medical examination, Dian was diagnosed as a primigravida with a prolonged second stage of labour. This is a critical situation where the delivery process does not progress despite full dilation and the foetal head being in the pelvic cavity. ‘The patient has had full dilation since 11:30 WITA, but the baby could not be delivered because the mother was having difficulty pushing. The foetal head was also already in the pelvis, so this condition is risky if further treatment is not carried out immediately,’ said Dr. Andreas in his report. He stressed that delays in handling such cases can trigger serious complications that threaten the lives of both the mother and the foetus. Responding to the report, PHC immediately activated its emergency response procedures. Given the geographical location of Komodo Island, which is separated by sea from the referral hospital in Labuan Bajo, the speed and precision of the fleet were key. Upon arrival at the port, Dian Lestari was immediately rushed by ambulance to Komodo Regional General Hospital to receive urgent obstetric care from a specialist medical team. PHC Public Relations officer Yoanna Daely emphasised that the mission’s success was not only about speed but also thorough operational readiness. ‘Upon receiving the report, our team immediately made comprehensive preparations. Speed is indeed important, but the readiness of personnel, fleet, and equipment is the main factor in ensuring the patient arrives at the hospital in the best possible condition,’ she explained.
