The Ministry of Defence has expressed its deepest condolences over the deaths of two participants in the 2026 Pioneer of Indonesian Development Undergraduate Programme (SPPI). Both participants passed away whilst undergoing a series of Military Basic Training exercises at TNI educational units.

The two deceased have been identified as Anisa Muyassaroh and Yonanda Muhammad Taufiq. Both were affiliated with the programme to strengthen the Merah Putih Village Cooperative (KDKMP) and the Merah Putih Fishermen’s Village (KNMP).

Head of the Defence Information Bureau at the Ministry of Defence’s Secretariat General, Brigadier General Rico Ricardo Sirait, explained that both participants experienced a sudden decline in their physical condition and received emergency medical treatment before being referred to the nearest hospital.

“Based on medical reports, the individual concerned (Anisa Muyassaroh) was pronounced dead due to heat stroke,” Rico said in a written statement on Tuesday. He detailed that Anisa, who was undergoing education at the Dodikjur Rindam VI/Mulawarman Educational Unit in Balikpapan, began experiencing health problems on Thursday last week.

Meanwhile, Yonanda Muhammad Taufiq was a student undergoing education at the Puslatpur Kodiklatad Educational Unit in Baturaja. Yonanda was reported to have experienced a drastic decline in his health condition earlier, on Wednesday. “Based on medical reports, the individual concerned was pronounced dead due to cardiac arrest,” Rico elaborated.

Rico stressed that all initial recruitment regulations were strictly implemented. Before being deployed to the TNI military training centres, both individuals were confirmed to have passed all rigorous selection stages, including multiple health examinations, and were declared eligible to participate in the education programme.

Responding to various speculations and information circulating among the public, Rico stated that the Ministry of Defence is conducting a total evaluation of the SPPI programme’s implementation at a macro level. This step is being taken together with the National Selection Committee and the TNI educational command.

Several crucial aspects being reviewed include the sharpness of the basic health selection mechanism, the intensity of periodic medical supervision during education, the handling of participants with specific conditions, and the speed of the emergency communication and reporting system.

Rico reiterated that the SPPI programme is essentially designed to produce excellent human resources with discipline, integrity, and strong managerial capabilities to voluntarily support village and coastal area development. However, participant safety remains the highest priority. “The safety and health of participants is the main priority in the implementation of the programme. The results of this evaluation will serve as material for improvement so that it runs better, safer, more professionally, and more accountably,” he concluded.
