A member of Commission I of the House of Representatives (DPR), TB Hasanuddin, has spoken out regarding the death of two prospective managers of the Red and White Village Cooperatives (Kopdes) and Red and White Fishing Villages during basic military training (latsarmil). He is calling for a total evaluation of the entire training programme following the incident. He stated that training instructors must thoroughly check the health of participants before they join such activities. “So in my opinion, it must be evaluated, especially for those who want to take part in such training. Their health must be checked properly so that those entering the activity are ready to carry out physical activities, even in hot conditions,” TB Hasanuddin told reporters on Wednesday, 24 June 2026. Commission I of the DPR is still awaiting the results of an investigation and an official explanation from the relevant parties regarding the incident. The PDIP politician assessed that there is no problem with providing basic military training to the public. However, the objectives must align with the working conditions of the participants, who are being trained to manage cooperatives. “But in my opinion, learning to march is fine for discipline when you want to learn. Military aspects in the context of the military, like shooting practice, then marching, in hot conditions, should be reduced,” he added. He suggested it would be better to provide training on cooperative management. It was previously reported that the Ministry of Defence confirmed the news of two participants in the Sarjana Penggerak Pembangunan Indonesia (SPPI) programme for the Red and White Village Cooperatives/Kelurahan and Red and White Fishing Villages who died while undergoing basic military training. The news regarding the deaths of participants named Anisa Muyassaroh and Yonanda Muhammad Taufiq spread on social media on Monday, 22 June 2026. “Participant Anisa Muyassaroh, who was undergoing education at Satdik Dodikjur Rindam VI/Mulawarman in Balikpapan, experienced a health disorder on 18 June 2026 and received medical treatment at the unit’s health facility before being referred to hospital,” said the Head of the Defence Information Bureau of the Ministry’s Secretariat General, Brigadier General TNI Rico Ricardo Sirait, in a press statement. Rico added that after a medical examination, Anisa was pronounced dead due to heat stroke.
