Two injured in brawl

JAKARTA: A brawl between residents of Kali Anyar and Semeru subdistricts in Jembatan Besi, West Jakarta, left a police officer and a local injured.

The brawl broke out between residents of the two subdistricts on Tuesday at around 9 p.m.

Second Adj. Insp. Marihot Simatupang, who was at the location, tried to break up the fight, but ended up being attacked by the residents.

He fired two warning shots, one of which hit attacker Agus Sutrisno in the abdomen. Simatupang had already suffered wounds to his head and arm.

Jakarta Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Tjiptono said on Wednesday that while both victims were still in hospital, their conditions were not life-threatening. The cause of the brawl is still under investigation, he said.

Tjiptono added that the police were investigating whether Simatupang was on duty at the time. However, the warning shots were in line with police procedure, he claimed. -- JP
