The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Kemlu) is still searching for the whereabouts of two Indonesian citizens (WNI) who are being held hostage in Myanmar. Kemlu continues to coordinate with local authorities to find the WNI.

“Regarding the two WNI suspected of being held hostage in Myanmar, up to now we are still continuing to coordinate,” said the Director of Protection for Indonesian Citizens at Kemlu, Heni Hamidah, at the Kemlu office in Central Jakarta on Thursday (23/7/2026).

Heni stated that her office has sent a diplomatic note to search for the two WNI. She mentioned that the search is still in progress. “We have also sent a diplomatic note to the local authorities to search for the whereabouts of the two WNI, and up to now,” said Heni. “This is still ongoing, we are not yet able to convey details, communication has been established, but this is still in process up to now,” she added.

Heni said the search process for the two WNI is currently underway. Kemlu has also not yet discussed the matter of the ransom allegedly demanded by the captors. “Regarding the ransom and who the captors are, this is also still in process for the two WNI in Myanmar,” she revealed.

As is known, two Indonesian citizens with the initials AE and S were taken hostage and a ransom of Rp 200 million was demanded. Kemlu sent a diplomatic note to Myanmar to investigate the case. “The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Indonesian Embassy in Yangon have received information regarding the alleged hostage-taking of two Indonesian citizens with the initials AE and S in Myanmar with a ransom demand of Rp 200 million,” said Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Yvonne Mewengkang when contacted on Friday (17/7). “Immediately after receiving the report on 15 July 2026, the Indonesian Embassy in Yangon conducted initial investigations, including communicating with the families and various sources of information on the ground,” she continued.
