A case of vehicle theft using the smashed-window method has recurred in the Depok City area, West Java. This incident took place in Kampung Sasak, Limo Village, Limo District.

Two operational vehicles, a Daihatsu Gran Max Blink Van and a Daihatsu Gran Max Pick Up, were targeted by a group of criminals. The perpetrators smashed the windscreens of both vehicles and fled with the Electronic Control Unit (ECU) modules located inside the left dashboard of both cars.

Depok Metro Police, through Public Relations Officer Assistant Commissioner Hendra Kurniawan, stated that they have inspected the crime scene and the case is currently under investigation. This criminal tactic, known as the ‘smashed window’ method, is a form of aggravated theft that frequently targets vehicles parked in deserted areas or along roadsides without supervision.

“The perpetrators usually scout the vehicle’s contents first to ensure there are valuables such as laptops, mobile phones, bags, or cash. Once a target is identified, they smash the glass using specialised tools (such as spark plug fragments or glass breakers) silently and quickly,” he said on Tuesday (1/9/2026).

AKP Hendra stated that the police are currently conducting a deep investigation, examining victim witnesses, and hunting for the perpetrators of the theft in Kampung Sasak.

Depok Metro Police are investigating the break-in of the two Gran Max units in the Limo area which saw the theft of car ECU components. The police have conducted a crime scene investigation and interviewed victim witnesses.

The theft incident in the Kampung Sak parking area occurred on Sunday, 30 August 2026, at approximately 17:00 WIB. As a result of the break-in, the victim suffered losses amounting to Rp35 million.

Similar cases have previously occurred in the IPTN Complex, Cimanggis District, on 26 August 2026, where a laptop was stolen. Another similar incident took place in a parking area at a restaurant on Jalan Margonda Raya, where a laptop, mobile phone, camera, and video shooting equipment were stolen.

Under Indonesian law, perpetrators of these crimes can be charged under Article 363 of the Criminal Code (KUHP) regarding Aggravated Theft, which carries a prison sentence of up to 7 years.
