Two girls nabbed for iguana theft

JAKARTA (JP): Police have arrested two young girls, identified as Sarina and Ely Parninggolan Tampubolon, for allegedly trying to steal an iguana, a unique reptile usually kept as a pet.

City Police spokesman Lt. Col. E. Aritonang said the two girls were caught red-handed by the iguana's owner, Didit Susianto, 22, at his house on Jl. Mas Koki Raya No. 32, Jati Pulo, East Jakarta.

"The two girls took the iguana out from an unlocked cage on the yard of Didit's house at about 1.30 a.m. on Sunday. But Didit heard the noise, woke up and caught the two girls holding his iguana," Aritonang said.

The two girls were apparently Didit's neighbors, who lived on Jl. Kayu Mas Raya, just a block away from the scene of the crime.

The case is being handled by Pulogadung police subprecinct along with the Rp 200,000 (US$17)-iguana, which was seized as evidence. (edt)
