Two fishermen shot in Mataram

MATARAM, West Nusa Tenggara: Sumbawa District Police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Bambang S. said on Friday that his officers had shot two fishermen in Jontal waters, Plampang subdistrict, as they had attempted to evade arrest.

He said the two were shot by a police team he had dispatched to arrest fishermen suspected of using explosives when fishing.

Another 14 fishermen were arrested along with the two following a tip-off from local residents, he said.

Bambang said the police confiscated eight bombs, three compressors, boats and masks from the fishermen.

He claimed his officers had acted in line with proper procedures as they had fired warning shots first.

He said the two fisherman had been wounded but had already been discharged from hospital.

The police were continuing the questioning of the other 14 fishermen.--Antara
