Two explosions heard during Kemayoran Jiung Market residential fire
JAKARTA — Two explosions were heard during a major fire that engulfed a densely populated residential area in Kemayoran Gempol Road, RT 02/RW 05, Kebon Kosong Village, Kemayoran District, Central Jakarta, on Monday (1/6/2026) evening.
At 11.20pm WIB, the sky around the area was glowing orange-red with thick smoke billowing high. The fire continued to blaze at least three metres high, clearly visible from behind the wall separating the settlement from Jusuf Hamka Field.
The explosions prompted terrified residents to scream and flee the area. Dozens of fire trucks were deployed and parked, blocking Benyain Suaeb Road. Due to the intensity of the flames, firefighting efforts were temporarily conducted from the sides of the area, particularly from the vacant field next to the settlement.
Residents rushed to salvage belongings from their homes, including furniture such as mattresses and wardrobes, in the field area. A narrow alley leading to Jusuf Hamka Field was used for evacuation, with residents still moving in and out to rescue valuables. Meanwhile, the alley in the market’s central area serves as an access point for firefighters.
Preliminary data shows 35 fire trucks and 106 personnel deployed to extinguish the blaze.
