JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - The Ministry of Public Works (PU) has completed the construction of Embung Kejawar and Embung Kedunggede in Banyumas Regency, Central Java. Both embungs are now ready to be utilised to support water provision, particularly for agricultural irrigation, while also helping communities face the dry season. Public Works Minister Dody Hanggodo stated that the construction of water infrastructure such as dams, weirs, embungs, and reservoirs plays a strategic role in maintaining national food security. β€œThe Ministry of PU remains committed to building and completing water management infrastructure such as dams, weirs, embungs, and reservoirs in various regions,” explained Dody on Wednesday (22/4/2026). Embung Kejawar, located in Kejawar Village, has a storage capacity of 9,534 cubic metres. Meanwhile, Embung Kedunggede in Kedunggede Village has a storage capacity of 18,028 cubic metres. Both embungs function as water reservoirs to maintain water availability, especially during the dry season. The presence of the embungs also supports more stable irrigation water supply, thereby contributing to increased agricultural productivity and food security in Banyumas Regency. In addition to their primary function as irrigation water providers, both embungs are also utilised as public spaces by the community. Embung Kedunggede is equipped with facilities such as an intake, outlet, guardhouse, toilet, and open areas that can be used for community activities. The Ministry of PU, through the Directorate General of Water Resources (SDA), will continue to develop embungs in various regions of Indonesia as part of efforts to strengthen sustainable water and food resilience.
