Two drown in Belawan river

MEDAN, North Sumatra: Two people were killed in an apparent drowning as they were swept away in a river that flows through Pancurbatu subdistrict, Deliserdang regency, North Sumatra, police said on Monday.

The victims from Namupencapir village were reported missing at around 11 a.m. on Sunday after they were last seen bathing in the swollen Belawan River, Pancurbatu police chief of detectives First Insp. Azuar said.

The bodies of Stefanus Ginting, 70, and Julika Sembiring, 29, were later found at around 10 p.m. on Sunday after hours of searching along the river. Azuar said the two were taken to the hospital for an autopsy. --JP
