Two unidentified drones attacked the Russian Embassy in the NATO member state of Sweden between Wednesday and Thursday night local time. One drone dropped a container of red paint, while another fell near the building with a fake explosive device attached.

The embassy stated that the incident occurred around 2:00 a.m. local time and indicated that the second drone fell near the diplomatic compound and on the mission’s grounds ‘not by accident’.

‘These latest circumstances show that we are facing not just a provocation, but a blatant attempt to intimidate employees of the Russian mission,’ the embassy said. ‘We will say outright that this will not succeed.’

The Russian Embassy said it has already reprimanded the Swedish authorities for what it described as a ‘failure to stop a systematic campaign of attacks’ that has been ongoing for the past two years.

Under the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, Sweden is obliged to protect foreign missions on its territory. However, police have only formally recorded the incident without making progress on ‘dozens’ of unresolved cases.

‘In light of this, it is the Swedish side that will bear full responsibility for further attacks and their consequences,’ the embassy warned. Officials in Stockholm have yet to respond.

The embassy has reported several incidents since May 2024, most involving containers of paint dropped by drones. One of the most notable incidents occurred in January 2025 when Swedish police arrested a Ukrainian national for crashing a car into the embassy gates.
