Two Die in Ukrainian Drone Attack on Russia
Ukrainian armed forces attacked the city of Syzran with drones, wrote Samara Governor Vyacheslav Fedorishchev on Telegram, noting two people were killed. Several people were also wounded in the attack on Syzran, which hosts a major oil refinery, according to Fedorishchev, as reported by AFP on Thursday (21 May 2026). Under the pretext of retaliation for almost daily bombardments by Russian troops against Ukrainian cities during the four-year conflict, the Ukrainian military frequently conducts strikes inside Russian territory, including in areas thousands of miles from its borders. Ukrainian authorities insist that they target Russian military sites as well as energy installations in an effort to disrupt the revenue from fossil fuels used by Moscow to fund its attacks on Ukraine. Diplomatic efforts led by Washington to end the conflict have so far stalled. Furthermore, US attention has shifted to the war against Iran since late February.
