Two Dead, Two Injured in Separate Train Accidents in Semarang and Batang
Two separate train accidents occurred almost simultaneously in Semarang and Batang, resulting in two deaths and two people being critically injured.
In Semarang, a collision occurred at the Kokrosono Street level crossing in Semarang Tengah district on Monday morning. A motorcycle carrying three people was struck by a train amid heavy traffic. A 12-year-old primary school student, ZIA, a resident of Kaliasin, Semarang Utara, died in the incident. The two other passengers, a 9-year-old child identified as HRA and the driver, 45-year-old Rujito, who is the victim’s uncle, suffered serious injuries and were rushed to Dr Kariadi General Hospital.
According to the Head of the Semarang Police Traffic Law Enforcement Unit, AKP Untung, the incident occurred around 7:00 AM local time. The motorcycle reportedly ignored the closed level crossing barrier and the shouted warnings from the railway crossing guard before being struck by the passing train.
In a separate incident in Batang Regency at around 6:18 PM, a pedestrian was fatally struck by the Kamandaka train (KA 182A) travelling from Tegal to Semarang. The accident occurred at a level crossing at KM 79+3/4 on the upstream track between Pekalongan Station and Batang Station, near the rear of the Batang market. The victim, a resident of Karangasem Selatan, Batang, is suspected to have had a hearing impairment. Witnesses reported that despite repeated shouts from bystanders and the train sounding its horn, the victim continued walking across the tracks after the crossing gates had been closed. The Head of the Road Safety and Railway Crossings Section at the Batang Transportation Agency, Bambang Pitono, confirmed that the victim appeared not to hear the warnings or the train’s repeated danger signal.
